Shout out to the locals

Let’s give a big old shout out to our locals

It might be a corner shop, a coffee shop or a pharmacy. Whatever your local might be, it has never been more important to support it.

LETS STAY OPEN

AND LETS SOURCE LOCAL

WE have all heard the mantras “shop local” ”eat local” “locally sourced produce” etc until we are blue in the face. They are phrases that are flung around constantly – quite often without substance. But at Kitchen by Mike we really practise what we preach.

In order to bring you our daily changing menus, nourishing food, healthy lunches, unique set menus, great vegetarian options and great dinner in the city, we source the majority of our produce from local farms, businesses and suppliers.

Shopping locally means just that. Use the smaller, independent growers and sellers, rather than falling back on bigger brands or industry megalyths.

If you support local you support the community where you live. It gives the local economy a chance to thrive. Local shops are personal, and more often than not a higher quality and ore unique product.

PLUS there are numerous health benfits from sourcing local ingredients (see blog on local honey for one) AND its much better for the environment, the soul and the world in general.

Don’t you think we should all work together to keep this INCREDIBLE world we live in and our very existence in tact, by supported each others efforts and shopping locally and eating only what we need not what we want……

With this in mind here are a few of our darling suppliers in a…

SUPPLIER SPOTLIGHT…

Pepe Saya:

What can we say but @PEPE SAYA you ROCK OUR WORLD. Mike’s bread would be so very lonely without your game changing, old school, cultured butter snuggled up with it. Butter is for crumpets, lunches and dinner. It was love at first sight the moment we laid eyes on you at @Carrirageworks farmers market all those years ago… (10??) ❤️😍 You are part of our DNA, and part of Sydney’s DNA. We love you man!

a decade long partnership.

a decade long partnership.

Korrowong Organics:

And we wanted to give a BIG Shout out always to our beloved SUPPLIERS big and small. We wouldn’t be here without them – obviously….

One of our most sought after dishes is the crunchy tender broccolini from the wonderful @KurrawongOrganics, whichis rarely off the menu. It is healthy, vegetarian, vegan and the perfect lunch time salad. Sooo very very good. Grown locally. In season. Minimal or no intervention, organic…

It ticks all our boxes. Kurrawong Oganics are a family run farm owned and operated by Leslie Bland and her husband Quentin. Their brussels sprouts and broccolini are quite simply the best in Australia.

Kangaroo Valley Pastured Eggs:

“Delicious eggs begin with happy chickens”

Another awesome family run farm @kangaroovalleypasturedeggs
Chooks are able to roam completely freeeeee as they are protected by oh so clever and cuddly Maremma dogs – (looking like golden retrievers but with the brains of kelpies).

Kristen, her husband Mark and children Matilda and Camryn started with 50 chooks 4 years ago and are now up to 6000…… they can hardly keep up with demand. Not surprising as the eggs are so good. We use them in all our cakes and biscuits but mainly in our much loved QUICHES.

Country Valley

long-time friend John Fairly of award winning @country_valley. Mike’s been using his milk for 10 years. All his cows are free to roam, pasture raised, so very well nurtured they might be called “pampered”.

The milk is creamy and not overly sweet due to it being pasteurised at the lowest temperature possible and being permeate free it is as natural as you can get. Delish.

Let’s work together, keep everyone employed, stay fresh, stay safe and stay strong.

We CAN DO this Sydney!

Love, Mike xx
