Is Natural Wine ACTUALLY Healthier?
Natural wine has been labelled the wine of ‘yesteryear’, before the induction of chemical pesticides which mean it can be stored longer. It’s certainly more romantic and artisanal. It sparks the passion in the process, and labour of love, which goes into creating wine.
The big question on the tip of our tongues is, are these unfiltered natural wines really better for you than conventional wine? I choose natural wine, made with the finest quality grapes sourced from vineyards that follow sustainable, organic or bio dynamic principles. They use minimal interventions & involve far less fining and absolutely no man-made chemicals. The quality of the grapes also means they are a whole lot more nutrient dense, (and tastier)
“Nothing added, Nothing taken away.”
So, Is Natural Wine ACTUALLY healthier? Yes and no, is the nebulous answer I come to. Booze is booze, at the end of the day, but a less refined, cleaner version is definitely the better choice.
Many natural wines are sulphite-free, meaning that no SO2 has not been added in the wine making process. And an adverse reaction to sulphites is often the leading cause in a stinking hangover.
Some signs that you may have an adverse reaction to sulphites include headaches, asthma, flushing, itching, congestion, hay fever, abdominal pain and skin rashes.
Other symptoms include the lack of an ability to bounce back the next day i.e an extended hangover where you may experience grogginess, fatigue, sickness. Which incidentally are also the result of having a little too much (oops!)
However, it might be as a result of the pesticides, preservatives and chemicals pumped into your bog-standard bottle. A sulphite free natural wine COULD be the answer to enjoying wine without the reactions. It works a treat for me.
Chemical sprays like glyphosate are used extensively in commercial vineyards, and these have been deemed a carcinogenic to humans, by the World Health Organisation, and further studies found negative health effects in animals, even at really low doses! However, It is important to remember, quality is crucial, but equally looking after your liver and knowing you're healthy limits, is the real goal.
I love natural wine, for its unique flavour, and whilst some taste fruity and fermented, others are delightfully subtle and quaffable! At Kitchen by Mike, I have curated a wine list of over 200 wines. This has been a lengthy and insightful journey. We hope to become a destination in the CBD, to pop by and have a chat about natural, Australian wine, and to create a lasting experience.
Natural wine can have a range of interesting and foreign flavour profiles, that challenge our understanding of what a wine, even a particular grape, can taste. Natural Wine also comes in lots of Vegan varieties, meaning our selection of is wide ranging and inclusive for a vegan and vegetarian diet.
At Kitchen by Mike I want to make natural wine more approachable, whilst inviting new & beginner natural wine tasters to join the club. Sydney is renowned for its versatile range of natural wine spots, and right in the heart of the CBD, we are here to offer all the gorgeous wine and information you might need, along with a tasty feast of seasonal food.
See you soon,
Mike xx
