The Theatre is Back, and so are we.

Hello again,

Let’s talk about the theatre.

As the brisk winter rolls in, and our beaches continue to empty out, Sydney’s creative arts scene explodes with culture, noise and colour. We are lucky to be living in one of the very few countries in the world which allows vibrant live performances to take place to packed out audiences.

I love to celebrate life as a shared experience.  I try as much as possible to be present and live in the moment. This has been hugely heightened for me and everyone, I am sure, throughout the course of the pandemic.

Food, like the theatre, is to be enjoyed in the moment. No one dish is ever exactly the same. No one lunch or dinner service is identical. Much like a theatre performance. You can watch the same play over and over and it will be different every time.

Food, like the theatre, is to be enjoyed in the moment.

FOOD IS FOR SHARING

Pop by and enjoy the shared experience with us.

At KBM I celebrate what’s local. From our sourced produce further afield, to our more local suppliers, to our neighbours all around -  I have always paid attention to the vivacity of our ever changing environment .

Our neighbours in the CBD range from businesses, to cafes, to art galleries and to theatres.

KBM is nestled between all the major theatres in the CBD. It is only a 10-minute walk from the Opera House, a quick jaunt to the Sydney Lyric Theatre, an amble to The Genesian State Theatre and a stone’s throw from The Capital Theatre!

Each venue is bursting with fresh Australian talent.

Watching live events is visceral. It occupies all the senses. And I feel a part of that story with what we offer at Kitchen by Mike.

Dance, sound experiences, theatre, ballet, operas and spoken word are rippling through theatres across the city and Sydney is ready to burst at the seams with talent.  So I want to pay tribute to all the culture, art and CREATIVITY that is spilling throughout the city this winter.

Below are some of my picks of what’s on in Sydney today, in and around Kitchen by Mike.

Come Away From

Come Away From takes us back to that unforgettable day in 2001 when the horrific terrorist attacks unfolded on New York City and Washington DC. The musical follows a small town, whose empathy, community and kindness welcomed in stragglers unflinchingly amidst the chaos. It sounds like an unlikely delight; however, it is more profound than ever in a time when we rely on community and connection. The show reflects the long overdue realisation that what we cherish is serendipitous moments of human kindness. This show is open now at the Capital Theatre.

Potted Potter

Slytherin to this fun and fabulous, magical re-enactment of all seven Harry Potter books in 70 minutes. Yes 70 minutes. That’s magic.

Potted Potter was first performed 15 years ago in a London bookshop, as entertainment for fans lining up to buy Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Since then, the show has travelled the world – and sold out four times in Sydney. If you fancied coming for dinner before the show, we could even (maybe) supply you with several harry potter puns in your dining experience with us before your play and provide a truly magical dining experience.

Hamilton

Have you heard the hype about Hamilton? It’s a hip-hop musical? It fuses two genres which, traditionally would juxtapose one another, to create a performance which excites, thrills and educates on the conception of America and its founding fathers. Sound obscure? It’s a phenomenon. Using colour blind casting, unique choreography and lyrics that will blow your mind, it has sold out to crowds across the globe and is currently playing at the Sydney Lyric Theatre with an all-Australian cast!

American Psycho

Sexy, scary and hilarious. Based on the movie cult classic, American Psycho is on at the Sydney Opera House now. It makes scathing, satirical commentary on the lavish gluttony of capitalism and evokes killer fashion as the ultimate commentary. Very outlandish, very exciting. The Sydney Opera House is less than a 1km walk from Kitchen by Mike, and we can certainly offer you a killer meal before the show! ;)

Vivid

It is SO exciting that we have VIVID coming to the Sydney CBD. Come in for a cosy dinner BEFORE or AFTER your brisk winter walk around the Quay and Rocks gazing at the wonderful lights. Cocktails and snacks from 4 onwards.

A CHEEKY COCKTAIL?

We got you.

Any cultural outing is supposed to be stress-free and a treat.  At KBM we serve fresh, quick and seriously good food.  No fuss, not frills just REAL whole nourishing tasty food.

Pre-theatre treats, a pre-theatre drink, a nibble, or a snacky thing.  Dinners are designed to share and can be a fast pre-theatre affair or a long leisurely post theatre treat.

Our new dinner menu is perfect for a quick bite and a selection of food to nibble on before a performance AND we are now open 4 nights a week for dinner. So, pop in before the theatre, or even after! We welcome you with open arms.

Let’s celebrate culture, performance and the importance of living in the moment, together.
See you soon,

Mike x
